Elisa Amorelli speaks at the Senate conference organised by Hon. Carfagna
What rules are needed to protect children and teenagers in digital environments? And what role can families, schools, institutions, platforms and social organisations play in building a culture of online safety that goes beyond mere control to encompass education, awareness and care?
These are the questions at the heart of the conference “SAFE: Social-Adolescents-Families-Education. The four dimensions of digital safety for minors”, scheduled for today, Thursday 14 May, at 3.30 pm, in the Sala Zuccari of Palazzo Giustiniani, in Rome. The initiative is organised by Hon. Mara Carfagna, who has tabled a draft bill in the Chamber of Deputies on the protection of under-16s when using digital platforms.
The programme includes institutional greetings from the President of the Senate Ignazio La Russa, an introduction by Hon. Mara Carfagna and greetings from Senator Mariastella Gelmini. The proceedings are divided into three panels: Safety on a global scale, featuring a presentation by Antigone Davis, Global Head of Safety at Meta; The Infrastructure of Protection, dedicated to age verification, technical standards and the responsibilities of regulators; Growing Up Online, on the educational partnership between families, schools and institutions.
This final panel will also feature Elisa Amorelli, Communications and Marketing Coordinator at the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, alongside representatives from the State Police, Parliament, civil society organisations, paediatrics and organisations committed to child protection.
For the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, the issue of children’s digital safety is an integral part of a broader educational journey: guiding the younger generation to experience the internet as a space for connection, learning and participation, whilst developing critical thinking, responsibility and decision-making skills. The protection of young people also depends on the quality of the adults who guide them: parents, teachers, educators, social workers and institutions called upon to work together to build safer, more inclusive and more informed digital environments.
As Hon. Carfagna emphasises in the press release issued by the Dire agency, “the digital world increasingly represents an area of risk for children and adolescents” and for this reason it becomes necessary to identify “new and more effective rules”, capable of strengthening the system of safeguards and supporting families in the task of educating and protecting their children.
The meeting therefore aims to bring together institutions, authorities, experts, families and platforms to identify concrete and shared solutions, bringing together the four dimensions referred to in the title: social media, adolescents, families and education.
