Cassese on De Mauro

The Italian Constitution is composed by 1357 words and “93% of the text is composed by basic Italian vocabulary.” This is how our fundamental charter was described as both simple and modern by Tullio De Mauro at a conference on the "Language of the Constitution" (June 16, 2008). "A sentence must contain less than 25 words” to be clear and efficient, explained Tullio De Mauro. And the text of the 1948 Constitution is composed on average by 20-word sentences. Therefore, the linguistic example of the Constitution represents an excellent inspiration for every legislative act that aims to be universally comprehensible.

Today, the National Library in Rome has organized a conference, based on the philosophy of Tullio De Mauro.  Sabino Cassese, Emeritus Judge of the Constitutional Court, will participate in the conference on  “Constitutional Ideals and Rules” that will address some of the salient aspects of the long preparation phase for the Constitution and highlight the cultural sources and constitutional ideas that were coded into the constitutional rules.
