May we speak about a new Italian artistic scene? How do artists relate to new technology? What new relations, experiences and knowledge does media art introduce?
The development of contemporary media is introducing new ways of conceiving our role in the world and our social interrelations. For over fifty years now, artists have been exploring this new development, especially abroad. In Italy, this new artistic track has not become visible yet. The exhibition has gathered some of the best Italian media art installations in which electronic technology reveals a new potential that lies beyond functional and commercial uses.
From the body to the mind and the mind to the body, the exhibition is organized as a journey through immersive systems that transform the spectator into a “sensitive system.” The exhibition showcases a wide range of media art installations, ranging from the Iocose drone selfies, to Mezzedimi’s Hvanaloop Televisions, from the works created by Strangis and Lion’s students to the metaphorical doors of Spanò and Torre’s porthole dividers. Serradifalco presents a conception of technology as a sensitive mind and body through satellite photography, while the Aye Aye present a gigantic englobing and interactive screen and Chierico showcases his concentration-activated helmet.
The From Body to Mind. New Generations of Italian Media Artists Exhibition is open to visitors in Hall V of the Centrale Montemartini Museum (Feb. 25 – March 1, 2015 9:00 am – 7:00 pm. The ticket office closes at 6:30 pm)
