On the occasion of the 2011 European Year of Volunteers, the two-year The Knowledge Volunteers project conceived and promoted by Fondazione Mondo Digitale, the leader of the partnership, responds to the challenge of active ageing and promotes social and digital inclusion through the use of the intergenerational learning method and the peer education process.
The project’s various actions funded in the context of the lifelong learning program (Grundtvig – multi-lateral projects) involve seven nations: Italy, United Kingdom, Greece, Romania, Spain, Czech Republic, and Switzerland.

The objective of the project is the creation of a network of knowledge volunteers of all ages by applying the intergenerational learning method with the peer education process that permits a multi-directional exchange of knowledge and experience. The young tutors that teach the senior citizens also learn various lessons from their elders. The senior citizens are also placed in the position to help one another: the best senior citizen “Internauts” can become volunteer tutors to those with less ability.
The project envisions digital literacy courses with support from specific manuals that have been specifically adapted to the nation of use. By the end of the courses, the network of volunteers will be consolidated, and this will facilitate the birth of a shared knowledge democratic learning society and the creation of Best Practices at European level.
The project is addressed to both young and old volunteers, and seeks the involvement of a large number of high school student (14-19 years old), in addition to assorted young people’s and volunteer’s associations and many social centers for the elderly in participating nations.
