New technologies to improve opportunities and the business roles that can be played by women in the democratic learning society

The Women and new technologies project desired by the City of Rome’s Councillorship for Equal Opportunities is oriented exclusively to post-graduates (less than 28 years old) or other graduates with little or no work experience. The objective is to inform recent graduates of the opportunities available in the working world and to warn them of the difficulties they may face in their future careers, emphasizing the role played by new technologies in improving such opportunities and the business roles that can be played by women in the democratic learning society. The project also aims at the insertion of young women graduates in the Industrialists’ Association member companies.
The long-term objectives for companies in Rome and Lazio include the development of a society based on merit and equal opportunities that fully recognizes the potential and talent of women at every level of organization.

The signature of the agreement between the City of Rome and the city’s Industrialists’ Association in July 2003 was followed by the creation of a network of female tutors chosen from the business, government, cultural, and financing worlds. These women provided testimony to the success of their careers, also in demonstration of the work possibilities offered by IA member companies.

After the congress entitled Women and new technologies held in the Campidoglio area in March 2004, the first pilot course was launched in November, 2004, with the participation of 18 young university graduates with degrees in science, humanism, and economics.

The themed blog entitled “donneict” (www.donneict.it) was set up in 2005 for the purpose of stimulating the establishment of a lasting community among course participants.

In 2006, the City of Rome and the city’s Industrialist’s Association signed a new agreement for a vast program for the encouragement of equal opportunities at companies in Rome, with extra attention to the areas in which ICT play strategic roles. The agreement will permit the testing and promotion of innovative models for the management of time capable of balancing a woman’s commitment to work and home in support of higher female employment in the workplace and esteem in society.

second course held in 2006 featured the participation of 28 female university graduates. Thanks to the sponsor, the Challenge SpA training company, a study grant entitled "Developing Managerial Skills” was set in memory of Raffaella Alibrandi, the directress of the initial program for the Rome Industrialist’s Association. The scholarship will be awarded to the best participant in the Women and new technologies course.
