Active ageing of the elderly through digital literacy activities and volunteer work in local social innovation experimental actions

Active ageing and intergenerational solidarity through learning and social innovation (ISIS) is a two-year project (2013-2015) supported by The European Year of active ageing and intergenerational solidarity prize (Italian Government/Family Policies) with the participation of 30 high schools and 30 senior community centers in 6 regions of Southern Italy.

ISIS supports the active ageing of the elderly through digital literacy activities and volunteer work in local social innovation experimental actions.
The young and the old are involved in volunteer activities to help others acquire precious lifeskills through virtuous cooperation and intergenerational exchange.

In particular, the project envisions intergenerational exchange of experience and training in:
  • computers, Internet and new technologies
  • social network
  • social planning

The ideas that emerge from the project are analyzed and pilot actions are implemented with support from FMD. At the end of activities, a jury composed of the Foundation’s experts awards the “Social Innovation Excellency Prize” to one project from each of the 6 regions involved that best interprets the concept of social innovation. A community that learns how to come up with new ideas and use them to change things at local level develops precious social capital that helps achieve liberation from the closed circle of abuse of the state welfare system and acquire the capacity to plan its own development with autonomy.
