An eco-blog to promote ethical and sustainable behaviour, a community of students for peer training and self-help in blended didactic activities, a site to relaunch tourism in Molise, a little-known region. As an answer to the health emergency, which further stressed inequality, penalising the work of women, the Coding Girls accepted the challenge to work on the Recovery Plan issues, from digitalisation to ecological transition, to provide a personal, inclusive and participatory interpretation at the service of the country. An intense year of work has led to the development of over 400 projects, including artificial intelligence applications, and the involvement of 15,000 students from 100 high schools in 62 Italian cities.

The Coding Girls Programme, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale in collaboration with the United States Diplomatic Mission in Italy, Microsoft, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, ENI and the Embassy of the Netherlands, was conceived to build a critical mass around gender equality and orient Generation Z towards quickly expanding sectors that require specialist skills, and contribute to the sustainable economic development of Italy thanks to women.

With over 900 hours of educational activities, the project included training sessions and coding competitions, webinars on professions of the future, orientation sessions with 30 academic partners and meetings with successful women in a wide range of fields, from management to research, who animated the international “My Future? It’s Up to Me” Campaign.

Thanks to its ability to network, the Coding Girls has taken roots locally, proposing a scalable and custom-tailored model that can be adjusted as necessary. This is what happened with the schools of Naples “adopted” by the Embassy of the Netherlands or the 600 young students in Turin, who with the help of the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, have been participating in a three-year programme with an impact evaluation on future choices, both academic and professional.

Speakers at the event include: Mirta Michilli, Director General, Fondazione Mondo Digitale; Antonella Polimeni, Rector, Sapienza University of Rome; Laura Auteri, Deputy Rector, University of Palermo; Stefano Ruffo, Director, International School of Advanced Studies in Trieste; Beth Poisson, Minister Counsellor for Public Affairs, U.S. Embassy Rome; Dewi van de Weerd, Deputy Ambassador, Netherlands; Roberta Bianchi, Digital and Information Technology Strategy, ENI; Chiara Mizzi, Director External Relations, Microsoft Italia, and Francesco Profumo, President, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo.

Amongst the students participating in the 7th edition, the United States Diplomatic Mission in Italy selected 10 candidates for the course on “Empowering and Connecting the Future Online,” organised by Boston non-profit Empower Peace/Women2Women, which has been developing leadership projects for young women for 16 years. The event also provided the opportunity to present “COde&FraME for Self-Empowerment,” a new project with ENI to train 2000 adolescents on the issues of sustainability and the energy transition.
