The Web for Stepping Out

She is Kurdish and has been living in Italy for two years. She fled from a war in Turkey when her house was burnt down along with the rest of the village. Now, she is a guest at the Centro Enea in Rome. Her only family is a brother who also lives in Rome at the Kurdish Culture House.

In Turkey, she was unable to study. She had a variety of jobs ranging from school cleaner to factory worker. During her journey to Italy, she also experienced a period in jail.

For the last four months, she has been working as an assistant to a 75-year-old disabled lady. At the Centro Enea, she attends Italian language courses and makes necklaces and bracelets with her friends, excelling at both.

As I interview her, the phone rings and she answers, “Speak Italian my sister” addressing a friend who lives in Florence. “I am here with an Italian friend.” She shows me how Kurdish women wear the veil, the bracelets she has made and her presidential pin …

In September, she will begin attending the Internet Room at the Centro Enea, where the Fondazione Mondo Digitale organizes free digital literacy courses. She will learn how to use a PC and then teach her elderly employer to use it, to step out of the house and remain in contact with the world.
