For the International Volunteer Day, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale reveals its commitment through the stories of Filomena, Lorenzo and Adriano, three members of the Knowledge Volunteers Network. The initiative includes an awareness-raising campaign, a call and the awards ceremony that will be held in May 2014.
The International Volunteer Day, which was held today at the Auditorium della Conciliazione, addresses the issue of how volunteering is necessary to kick start the social reconstruction of our country. Filomena, Lorenzo and Adriano recount their experience as members of the Knowledge Volunteer Network promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.

Filomena (53) is a goldsmith and seamstress: “I chose to become a knowledge volunteer because I believe in youth and like to share my experiences with them. I dedicated some of my time to a group of young women studying to become stylists. Indeed, one of them just opened up a shop in Trento. It has been one of the most satisfying things that has happened to me!”

Lorenzo (19) is a future aerospace engineer: “I’m a knowledge volunteer because I have understood how important it is to allow elders to experience our digital era. After having learned about the Grandparents on the Internet Project, I became a tutor and started teaching elders to use computers, surf the web and use e-mail and other digital tools. It’s not only incredibly gratifying, but also very instructive. I learned how to be patient and strive to understand others.”

Adriano (67) is a former Tech Ed Teacher: “I have only recently become a knowledge volunteer. I found out about it on the Internet and immediately fell in love with idea. Now, I can continue my career as a volunteer and help my peers learn about the secrets of technology. I have already organized a class with 72 students and am incredibly satisfied with how it’s going. I’m certainly going to continue teaching others.”
The Network of Knoweldge Volunteers is an international network of youths, elders and adults that exchange knowledge and skills for the social and digital inclusion of elders and to help youth build their future. The Network is related to the Italian “Knowledge is Wealth. Share it!” campaign and the call that will lead to the presentation of awards to the best volunteers. The awards ceremony will take place in May 2014 at the Rome Campidoglio.
