Sustainability at School

The Liceo Amaldi, in the Rome Tor Bella Monaca neighbourhood, has the first drone flight camp in an Italian school dedicated to environmental sustainability. The project is part of the three-year Smart & Heart Rome Programme, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale with funding from the City of Rome – Department for Digital Transformation, which plans for the installation and management of seven gyms in as many schools to contrast educational poverty in the suburbs with a high degree of social distress.

As Project Coordinator Francesca Meini explains, the video was filmed in the school’s gym, where the indoor drone flight camp was developed and allows testing under all atmospheric conditions.

School administrator Maria Rosaria Autiero points out that “it is a project that fulfils the school’s need to provide a wide ranging and significative course catalogue. And it is coherent with the idea of a school that is open to the local community and in synergy with the positive input of the suburban community.”

“We are committed to promoting technology in society,” explains Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.

“Investing in human capital is fundamental because a city cannot be smart if it does not invest in the education of people and doesn’t provide everyone with all the opportunities to participate in a democratic knowledge society. So, it is a concrete commitment to drive the economic recovery and the future in difficult areas.”

“These seven Innovation Gyms represent an investment on the education of youth to provide them with digital skills for social innovation and environmental sustainability.” Riccardo Corbucci, President of the “Roma Capitale” Commission – Statute and Technological Innovation believes “investing in the orientation and education of youth means investing in our future, using technology, innovation and sustainability to improve the quality of life of citizens, to reduce inequalities amongst city neighbourhoods, in a complex city like Rome. The objective is to provide our youth with the skills that will help them in the working world and guarantee and opportunity for economic development in this city and, therefore, job opportunities.”
