“Grandparents on the Internet” is the digital literacy plan for over-sixties developed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale in 2002. Its intent is to bring young students and elders closer together through the use of computers for web navigation, e-mails and e-gov services. During the course of eleven editions, over 16,000 elders received diplomas thanks to over 13,000 tutors and 1500 coordinating teachers.
This intergenerational model has been successfully experimented in 12 other Italian regions and 8 European countries. Now, it has also arrived to six regions in southern Italy with novelties: the new e-Med Manual, writtenin large font and dedicated to on-line health, and the intergenerational meetings open to all citizens on issues such as cross-media and digital TV. The project was born to contrast scholastic dispersion and social unease and promote active ageing, lifelong learning and solidarity amongst generations.
Following the basic course, there also is the opportunity to achieve the Master Nonni SUD Internet certification for elder volunteers that want to help their peers learn more about on-line services. Moreover, 6 Recycling Labs are now operative to regenerate old office computers that are then distributed to elderly centers or disadvantaged schools.
Project Nonni Sud Internet is promoted by the FMD in collaboration with Auser and Anteas and is financed by Fondazione Con il Sud as a part of the “Special and Innovative Projects” action line.
