Starting in Turin

The national Coding Girls Tour begins in Turin. From November 5 to 22, over 10,000 young women will be involved in the programme in 14 Italian cities. The programme, which is promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the United States Embassy in Italy in collaboration with Microsoft Italy, aims to promote gender equality in science and technology. After coding training sessions in schools, on November 5, young women will compete in a programming marathon at the University of Turin. And it’s just the beginning of a project with the “Compagnia di San Paolo” that will provide educational and orientation opportunities for three years to hundreds of young women.

From November 5 to 22, 150 young female university students, researchers and role models will present the beauty of technical and scientific subjects to over 10,000 peers in 80 schools in 14 Italian cities. The aim is to overcome gender prejudice, promote the talent and leadership skills of young women and allow them to experiment with new technology. And these are just a few of the challenges of the sixth edition of Coding Girls, the national programme promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the United States Embassy in Italy in collaboration with Microsoft Italy.

On November 5, the Coding Girls Tour 2019 will begin in Turin. After intensive coding training sessions in schools throughout the Province (IIS Bosso Monti, LSS G. Bruno, LSS Galilei Ferraris, ITCS Sommeiller, ITIS Avogadro, LAS Cottini), 110 young women guided by American supercoaches Anthonette Peña, National Board Certified Teacher and STEM Teacher Lead, and Emily Bradford, Independent Writer and Software Developer based in Silicon Valley, will participate in a hackathon at the University of Turin. The alliance with the Compagnia di San Paolo will allow the project to grow local roots. For three years, the programme will orient and evaluate the professional and educational careers of 600 young women aged 13-19. The initiative is also supported by “Stem by Women,” the network developed by the Turin Polytechnic and University to promote women studying scientific and technological subjects.

Besides Turin, the Coding Girls Tour will involve 13 other Italian cities: Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Pisa, Pistoia, Reggio Calabria, Rome, Salerno and Trieste. Thanks to the local work of the Coding Girls Association, the programme’s reach and networking potential continues to expand and create new alliances with public and private organisation.  At present, the association coordinates 25 hubs in schools and involves students and researchers in 13 Italian universities as mentors and role models for their peers.
