Trust aWare: focus on the protection and security of data for education
“Although the adoption of digital tools to improve education presents a vast potential, there also are a few obstacles that have to be overcome. Digital technology must be used in an open, fair and equable manner. A new contribution, which has been published on the blog of European Project Trust aWare, addresses the issues of data protection and security in education. The article is written by Iulia Lazar, Project Manager of the Romanian InfoCons Association.
The issue of digital data protection is increasingly raising worries even in the Italian school system, especially after the use of distance learning platforms during the pandemic. The Italian Ombudsman, in fact, has recently published an updated versione of the school privacy manual (La scuola a prova di privacy. Edizione 2023).
Are the choices made in terms of data protection and security uniform? What measures can be adopted to prevent intrusions? Do current regulations provide sufficient protection? In her article, Iulia Lazar explains why the protection and security of data is fundamental in education, and how it can improve the entire learning process. “With the progress of technology and the growing dependence of schools on digital tools and systems, the protection of sensitive data is essential” and “teachers are fundamental to protect security, privacy, and the confidentiality of their class.”
Educational institutions should develop detailed data protection policy, carry out frequent security audits, provide information on best cybersecurity practices, and invest in reliable technological solutions to solve these issues in education. Data security in educational environments can be further improved by collaborating with IT specialists and conforming to sector standards.
