Nine students from Class 5N at the Itis Galileo Ferraris School in Naples decided that they were “tired of being known around the world for the garbage disposal problem” and decided to transform waste into work.
They trade but tickets for recycling material. Then, together with the help of a designer and computer software, they use the school lab to turn this material into furniture and lamps made out of aluminium, plastic, bottle bottoms.
Every piece produced is original and unique, as well as functional and innovative. And they are also beautiful. They are sold on the web and at big events in Scampia. All profits go towards the purchase of new bus tickets.
The objective of Project “Clean Up and Innovate” is to help students who have dropped out of school (at least 40 young people aged 16-23) to find a job; educate citizens on environmental respect and regulations and fight vandalism and bullying.
The students have also kicked off a crowdfunding campaign on Phyrtual.org with Lorenzo Dente (20), who is the testimonial for the #itsuptome campaign, launched by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale to promote social innovation projects in schools

Lorenzo Dente participated in the Seattle YouthSpark Summit as a testimonial for Project Meet No Neet, part of the global Microsoft YouthSpark Programme. The Scampia experience is the only Italian initiative included in the YouthSpark video.
