The World Robot Olympiad 2018 International Fair was held on November 16-18, 2018 in Chiang Mai, in Thailand. Italy was represented in the Open Senior Category and in the Future Innovators Contest by the Bee Careful Team, composed by two students from the Liceo Vito Volterra in Ciampino (Rome): Lorenzo Casavecchia (Class IV SB) and Davide Incagli (Class III SD).

The team was selected last April in the Italian competition of the World Robot Olympiad, held as part of RomeCup 2018.

In this telephone interview with Francesca Meini, Lorenzo (16) describes Project Bee Careful and the experience in Thailand. Now, the team is already at work on a new idea to present at RomeCup 2019.

Lorenzo and Davide presented  Project Bee Careful Device at the World Robot Olympiad 2018, a project developed with the support of Researcher Daniele Carnevale at the University of Rome - Tor Vergata. The objective of Project Bee Careful is to defend bees from the varroa parasite mite. Thanks to a device placed at the entrance to the bee house, the bees move through a tunnel monitored by a micro-camera that allows users to identify infected bees and move them towards a tunnel that contains the necessary medication.

A news item on the school’s official web site announces: “This is the conclusion of an extraordinary year for our school in terms of technological projects. We achieved success at the national level starting in January with our victory at Hack 2030 by Daniele Chillemi (5SA), which led him to participate in the Dubai GESF, and the third place at the final Coding Girls Hackathon on November 15 by four of our young women.”
