Public Health

Three intensive appointments between December 2018 and February 2019 will explore the potential of digital technology for the prevention and cure of diseases. SITI will experiment with specific training for its public health professionals in digital learning environments with immersive and automatic tools. The course will end with a creative development marathon on the importance of communicating the value of vaccines.

“This initiative for our members,” explains former SITI President Fausto Francia, “comes after one on leadership held last year, a sign of our active role on innovative issues in science. Each session will be opened by a prologue dedicated to current prevention issues.”

The elements that play a strategic role in the development of a healthier society include not only data and AI, but also other digital tools like the Internet of Things, blockchain, augmented and virtual reality and even social media for far-reaching prevention campaigns. The mini-course on “Digital Transformation in Public Health” will provide 24 professionals selected by SITI with experiential training on cutting-edge technology supporting scientific research to improve hygiene services (awareness raising, prevention, organization and distribution). This is a concrete tool to design innovative solutions that make services more resilient, accessible and efficient.

The training sessions will be held at the Fondazione Mondo Digitale’s Phyrtual Innovation Gym. Each session will include a practical lab on the contextualisation and application of the presented technology (including vaccine and pathology registers). The Phyrtual Innovation Gym, in fact, hosts a series of high-tech labs (including an Augmented and Virtual Reality Lab and an IoT and Robotics Lab) where participants will have the opportunity to learn about the concrete application of technology in public health, besides working on the development of innovative services and applications. Each of the three appointments includes two consecutive days of training.

The course will kick off on December 14 with a focus on the Internet of Things and Big Data, two new tools that can be employed to promote patient privacy and prevention. The next day, the course will address artificial intelligence and machine learning for epidemiological monitoring and the development of awareness-raising strategies. On January 18-19, the labs will investigate the use of blockchain and augmented reality for awareness-raising activities on paediatric vaccinations. On February 8-9, mini-talks on scientific subjects and communication strategies on social networks will address the crucial question of correct citizen information. The course will end with a creative development marathon on the importance of communicating the value of vaccines.

The educational programme was developed by ECM Scientific Manager, Carlo Signorelli, Professor of Hygiene and Public Health, and for the digital part by Prof. Alfonso Molina, Personal Chair in Technology Strategy, University of Edinburgh and Scientific Director of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale. The Digital Academy was developed with the support of MSD ITALIA srl.
