Building bridges between young people and businesses in the heart of the Mediterranean
The PRODIGY (PROmoting Digital and Green Skills for Youth) project continues its work to support NEETs (aged 15–34) in developing the key skills needed to navigate the digital and green transition. Funded under ESF+ Social Innovation+, the project involves 240 young people across Italy, Greece and Bulgaria, promoting social inclusion, career guidance and new professional opportunities.
In Reggio Calabria, one of the project’s key cities, we have gathered some testimonials showing how collaboration between training providers, businesses and the local community can generate concrete opportunities for young people.
Marta: gaining skills to feel ready for the job market
For many young people, the digital divide remains a significant barrier. Marta Pellicanò chose to take part in the project precisely to strengthen her digital skills and embark on a journey of personal and professional growth. Thanks to the constant support of a coach, Marta tackled initially complex topics, learning to use software and artificial intelligence tools with greater confidence and awareness.
“Today I certainly feel more confident and ready to enter the job market.”
The business perspective: Aifitec srl
The business world has also played an active role in the project. Karolina Maria Sangrigoli, director of Aifitec srl, took part in the activities through mock interviews and discussions with the participants.
According to Sangrigoli, digital skills are now essential in any sector, but they must be accompanied by soft skills, communication skills and an aptitude for teamwork.
To strengthen the dialogue between education and business, she emphasises the importance of work placements and internships that allow young people to engage directly with the world of work, bringing new ideas and up-to-date skills into companies.
Doing business in Calabria: the story of Mittica Trasporti
Jessica Mittica, Operations Manager at Mittica Trasporti, speaks instead about the value of doing business in Calabria and investing in the region’s young people.
For her, PRODIGY represents a concrete opportunity to offer new prospects to young people who wish to train and build their future without leaving the region.
Companies are looking for proactive, curious and motivated candidates, but also for reliability and a sense of responsibility. “Being punctual for an interview and not standing someone up is the first sign of reliability”.
According to Mittica, it is essential to strengthen communication between businesses, training institutions and trade associations, in order to nurture local talent and forge stronger links with the region’s business community.
