The Power of Multiple-choice Questions in Didactics

Didattiche.2024 from four points of view.

A small but significant delegation from the Fondazione Mondo Digitale participated in Didattiche.2024 (Rimini, Nov. 15-16), organised by the Centro Studi Erickson, to reflect on the multiple meanings of innovation and the promotion of efficient didactics for everyone.

Let’s review the event as experienced by Professors Barbara Avella and Mauro Crepaldi, organisers of an operative table, and Project Officers Claudia Belella and Marta Pietrelli.

An extraordinary experience!

They were two days of intense work during which we both did our best to present the unexpected power of multiple-choice questions on coding, tinkering, digital citizenship, and environmental sustainability. It was an opportunity to meet teachers working in realities in terms of area, training, and school level. The shared energy and passion made every moment unique and enriching.

The organisers’ welcome was impeccable, and not only during the conference, but also outside. Claudia B. and Marta P. from FMD acted with confidence, attention, and care, and were greatly appreciated.

An experience that left a profound mark and allowed us to grow professionally and personally. Thank you!

Barbara Avella, Professor, “Our School” Community

Proposing a “Copernican Revolution” in the use of multiple-choice questions, transforming them from purely evaluative tools into training tools, was an ambitious but fully achieved challenge.

Teachers, from all types and levels of schooling, representing different disciplines and geographical areas, welcomed the proposed technology and methodology with sincere interest, honest wonder, and a new awareness. And integrated with coding, tinkering, digital citizenship, and environmental sustainability courses, they demonstrated their effectiveness in different education cycles.

It was made possible by the perfect organization, the result of Erickson’s 40 years of experience and expertise (Happy Birthday!), and the extraordinary ability of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale to propose innovative, useful, and concrete activities.

The work was made even more significant by the professionalism and passion of Claudia B. and Marta P., who perfectly represented the creative energy of the organisation.

This clearly shows us that change is possible when vision, experience and collaboration come together. It is an invitation to believe in the power of innovation and the ability to transform our way of teaching and learning for a future in which school will increasingly become a space of growth and hope for everyone.

Mauro Crepaldi, Professor, “Our School” Community

Participating in the Erickson Didattiche 2024 Conference was an extremely enriching experience that provided me with the opportunity to interact with many different realities in the area. Realities that, like the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, share the commitment to inclusive and innovative education.

On this occasion, we met numerous teachers from schools of all levels, from all over Italy. They all showed great interest in innovation and in sharing tools and knowledge, with the aim of providing their students with an increasingly dynamic and engaging education capable of overcoming the traditional approach based exclusively on textbooks. Experimentation, the conscious use of digital tools, and more interactive methodologies are gaining a central role, leaving room for more creative and effective learning methods. It was truly stimulating to observe the great enthusiasm with which the teachers interacted, showing a strong desire to reinvent themselves, get involved, and continuously improve.

A particularly significant moment was the work at the thematic tables proposed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, thanks to Coaches Mauro Crepaldi and Barbara Avella. Here, we explored the importance of “learning while having fun,” discovering how tools such as multiple-choice questions, if designed properly, can be transformed into effective assessment tools. Not only do they allow for the consolidation of knowledge, but they also help students reflect on themselves and their studies.

Observing the “behind the scenes” work of a team of professionals, which is often perceived only from the student’s point of view, was fascinating and enlightening.

Technology is undoubtedly revolutionizing many sectors, including school and education. However, what is truly striking is the commitment of teachers to keep up with the times and maintain the students’ curiosity and motivation alive. The synergy between digital and analogue, if well blended, can represent an extraordinary opportunity to enrich and innovate the educational landscape.

Claudia Belella, Project Officer

I particularly appreciated the attention given to the integration of technology in teaching, with practical examples of how digital resources can make learning more interactive and personalized. Furthermore, the reflections on inclusiveness and support for students with special educational needs were particularly stimulating, especially given the Fondazione Mondo Digitale’s more than twenty-years of commitment to the issues of inclusion and diversity that today are taking shape alongside Google with the Pathway Companion Project, an intelligent tutoring system for special educational needs.

Among the many labs, I would like to single out the two operational tables proposed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, with two long-standing coaches –  Mauro Crepaldi and Barbara Avella – on digital citizenship and sustainability and on coding, making, and tinkering, addressed through a new potential learning methodology, and not just evaluation, such as that of multiple-choice questions.

The exchange and discussion with the participating teachers strengthened our work and led towards inclusive curricular innovation.

Marta Pietrelli, Project Officer
