Playing Centerfield

Cristina Tortia is a Mathematics for Engineering student at the Politecnico di Torino. In her free time, she likes to play football, coaches a team and is a head scout. In her life, both in her studies and leisure time she likes to play centerfield with vision, strategy and leadership.

In her experiential video lesson, Cristina describes how gambling works to introduce the theory of probability. She analyses four games – roulette, lotto, Win for Life, scratch cards – to introduce the concept of “mathematical hope and fair play.

As part of Project Coding Girls in Turin, promoted with the support of the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, we have collected presentations by young women in the world of STEAM to interest young men and women in studying scientific subjects.

Thanks to the collaboration of Arianna Montorsi, Rector’s Coordinator for Gender Equality and Diversity at the Politecnico di Torino, many young women have been involved that will hold courses in schools during the new school year.
