“Technology is too important to be left to men” is the slogan of Neele Kroes, EU Commission VP, who launched ICTLadies to encourage young women to study and undertake a career in ICT. A study by the European Commission reports that with equal female-male employment in the ICT sector, the European GDP would increase by ca. 9 billion per year.
Progetto NERD?, which is promoted by the Computer Science Department of the Rome Sapienza University in collaboration with IBM, aims to fight the stereotype per which computers are for nerds, gamers and asocial individuals. NERD? will show how computer science is a creative, interdisciplinary, social and problem-solving based subject, all activities at which women have always excelled.
During the project, dedicated to young women in high school, students will learn to programme apps for smartphones over the course of a couple of lessons. And without the need for any previous experience, thanks to AppInventor, a tool developed by MIT.
