At the 2014 Awards Ceremony for Project Nerd?, promoted by the Computer Science Department of the Rome Sapienza University in collaboration with IBM, the winners also received a coupon to participate in the Fab Lab at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym. The 18 students used it yesterday and spent a special afternoon at the Rome Città Educativa.
Nerd is an acronym for the Italian expression “It’s not stuff for women?” It especially refers to coding, but yesterday the girls also proved that digital fabrication and rapid prototyping is stuff for women!
The students also learned about robots and experimented with them at the Robotics Centre, as well as all the machinery on hand at the Fab Lab. They then used a 2D design software package to produce laser-cut Plexiglas pendants, rings, etc. and personalize them with names and phrases … all in three hours, including a quick snack!
They left with a new passion and a special souvenir in their pockets self-produced in the Fab Lab.
The 18 girls are students at seven secondary schools in Rome (A. Righi, C. Matteucci, De Sanctis, Gullace Talotta, E.Q. Visconti, B. Russell) and on in the Province of Rome (IISS Sandro Pertini di Genzano).
