Yesterday, the Salvo D'Acquisto Elderly Centre held the final event for Project “Going Digital” that involved the IIS Evangelista Torricelli School and the Marvasi Centre. The 13th District of Rome is as vast as Savona, has as many residents as Salerno and an ageing index of 172, greater than the city average (163.8).
The Torricelli School, directed by Anna Maria Scala, was one of the first schools in Rome to experiment with the intergenerational learning model thanks to Project Grandparents on the Internet, which also featured an alliance with elderly centres. And this tradition continues with our “historical” reference point: Prof. Maria Mascheretti and her colleagues Giovanna Tosti and Elena Subrani, all three literature professors.
Students in three third-year classes (sections A, C and D) acted as tutors. “We opened our classes and mixed our students,” explained the teachers “to form three parallel groups for Project Going Digital and for system actions, as planned by the Indire Guidelines." A group of 20 students helped the grandparents participating in Going Digital, while the other two groups experimented with creative writing and storytelling, inspired by the life experiences and stories of the elders.
The interviews conducted by Eleonora Curatola document the various points of view of the protagonists. The professors explained how they interpreted the project to promote intergenerational dialogue and drive the growth of their students; the tutors described their satisfaction with the learning results of their elder students and the complexity of the teaching and Maria Teresa bared her emotion in returning to school to become a techno-grandma!
The final event featured the participation of teachers, the President of the Giovanna Mostarda Elderly Centre, District 13 Councillor Serena Maria Candigliota (Social, Health and Equal Opportunity Policy) and Eleonora Curatola for the Fondazione Mondo Digitale. Students exhibited the works completed for the project, including short videos, presentations and stories inspired by the elders. Then, both the elders and students received participation certificates. The elders thanked their tutors for their patience and kindness, the dedication of the students and teachers and the pleasure for having them brighten up the elderly centre. Obviously, a fantastic buffet prepared by the grandmas and parents of the students concluded the day.
The programme will terminate next Monday when students and over-60s will be at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym for two courses. Two groups will participate in Programme Living Digital, while a mixed group of students and elders will experiment with digital manufacturing tools at the Fab Lab.
