Experience the Internet at its best: yesterday's event at Gamm with Corecom Lazio
Over 100 teachers, parents, grandparents and children met yesterday afternoon at GAMM for an open dialogue on the digital education of the younger generation.
The event “Media and minors: a dialogue between generations”, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale ETS in collaboration with CoReCom Lazio, refocused attention on the role of the family in building digital well-being.
Beyond prohibitions: an educational alliance is needed
In Europe, the debate on the relationship between minors and digital technologies is growing. In Italy, too, the data paint a complex picture: daily smartphone use among children aged 6-10 has almost doubled in recent years, while among 11- to 13-year-olds, almost one in two already uses social networks, often before the legal age. In this scenario, bans are not enough. What is needed is awareness, critical skills and shared educational responsibility. Schools, families and institutions are called upon to build a stable alliance capable of transforming rules into opportunities for dialogue and growth. The meeting at GAMM took place in this spirit: a concrete discussion on tools, best practices and guidelines to help children and young people experience digital technology in a safe and responsible way.
The Vivi Internet, al meglio (Live the Internet to the fullest) project
The initiative is part of the Vivi Internet, al meglio project, promoted in Italy by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale with the support of Google.org.
The programme supports third, fourth and fifth grade primary school students in the Lazio region, together with educators and families, in developing skills for safe, critical and participatory digital citizenship, in line with the main European and national strategic references. Alongside training, the Foundation has also produced the guide Media e minori. Dal controllo alla cura educativa (Media and minors. From control to educational care), a booklet designed to help parents and teachers accompany children and adolescents in the “virtual” space, where the physical and virtual dimensions are integrated into everyday life.
A shared responsibility
A clear message emerged from the institutional interventions: digital education means primary prevention, building antibodies against cyberbullying, hate speech and disinformation before they become concrete threats. As Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, repeatedly emphasised, the commitment is to transform digital technology into an educational, critical and inclusive opportunity, strengthening the role of families as the first allies in the growth process. The event concluded with an informal social gathering to continue the dialogue between generations. Because even online, we grow better together.
