The Acting: Social Agents Promoting Active Ageing through ICT Project, developed in collaboration with four other European states, has allowed ten Italian social agents to enjoy e-learning training on active ageing and digital literacy. At the end of the training period, each agent organized activities involving over-sixties.

After months of work, both on- and off-line, the project selected the initiatives developed by Aldo Cipolli (Tradate) and Marcello Pistilli (Rome).

Aldo Cipolli and his group created a virtuous volunteering circle in which over-60s learn to surf the web and manage an information office for local citizens. Marcello Pistilli meets not only with over-60s, but also with students and parents, providing information on safe Internet use. As a matter of fact, he also has a blog on computer safety for elders.

The jury selected Marcello Pistilli, who will now fly to Geneva to represent the Italian experience and meet the winners from other countries. Only one of them will become the European Social Agent.

Italy can rely on a large number of committed citizens who are involved in a variety of initiatives, including: Matteo Troìa, digital champion, who has been working for a long time on improving the digital literacy of elders in Casarza della Delizia; Pierfelice Licitra, who has created a social community that centres on the activities of the members of the Esquilino elderly centre in Rome; and Monica Bertuol who is introducing elders in a retirement home to the dynamics of Facebook.
