A Lesson on School Desks

What could be done with the old school desks that were abandoned due the emergency measures? From icons of the pre-Covid school they become tools to reflect on didactics. Roberto Ianigro, Professor of Sketching and Art History at the IIS “Via Roma 298” School in Guidonia (Rome), has designed and developed an open-air didactic installation composed of 24 works with students and alumni. Cuts, damage, cracks, and chewing gums stuck underneath: the desks have become a narrative tool that starting from art history (from 400 to the present) provide a wealth of transversal connections. They provide an alternative to classrooms (outdoor education) to provide a lesson on school desks, integrated with digital devices and a special focus on special needs and inclusive courses thanks to experimental audio descriptions (call for ideas).

Roberto Ianigro, Professor at the IIS “Via Roma 298” school in Guidonia (Rome), presented Project Double Desk Trib[ut]e in the “Up to 18 Years Old” category at the tenth edition of the Global Junior Challenge and was selected as best project in its category. The international competition, designed and promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, rewards the creative and innovative use of technology education and the future of youth [see news: #GJC2021 Winners]. The tenth edition, developed in collaboration with the Centro Studi Erickson and the patronage of the City of Rome, is dedicated to projects that, during the health emergency, brought together innovation and quality education with inclusion, actively involving families and the entire educational community.

In the video, Roberto Ianigro is interviewed by Alberta Testa before the awards ceremony at the Rome Campidoglio.
