Italo-American Grandparents on the Internet

Valtiberina on line has published a short story on Luca Piergiovanni’s trip to the United States:

Luca Piergiovanni is in the United States to serve as a judge for the important Coni-USA Awards for the 150th Anniversary of Italian Unity. Whilst chatting with Ambassador Giulio Terzi, an idea popped up that the Ambassador really liked. The Professor from Pieve explains: “It’s about a digital literacy project called 'Grandparents on the Internet’ that we have been involved in with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, which is directed by Tullio de Mauro. The idea is to export these courses to the United States, because – as the Ambassador explained – they meet the requirements for the Embassy programme to safeguard and promote Italian culture in the United States." And how will you proceed? “Ambassador Terzi suggested I contact the Consul General Cristiano Maggipinto. The Italian experience is consolidated, but it will be interesting to see Italo-American students tutoring elders on how to use a computer, surf the web and use e-mail and public administration services."

According to the Rapporto Italiani nel Mondo, a Report edited by the Fondazione Migrantes, there are 209.628 Italian emigrants residing in the US, nearly 5,2% of the population. The emigrants are mainly from Sicily (43,831) and Campania (34,483).
