The 10th edition of “I Am There” will involve the educational communities of 5 major cities with over 200 participants and more than 30 partners.

 

On June 20, as part of the celebrations for the World Refugee Day proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations, the “I Am There” solidarity football match organised by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale promotes the values of integration and hospitality through sports. Matches will be held in five cities -Milan, Rome, Bari, Reggio Calabria and Palermo – with migrant centre guests, students, volunteers and third sector associations.

According to UNHCR data, 68.5 million individuals have had to flee from their country; over 25 million are refugees and over a half are minors. For ten years, now, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale dedicates the annual “I Am There” solidarity football match to them. The event brings students, migrant centre guests and volunteers together to experiment winning strategies for social inclusion and integration through sports. Over 200 young migrants and students will participate in matches on June 20 in MilanRomeBariReggio Calabria and Palermo against discrimination and racial prejudice.

 

This year, the event will involve the local network of Project OpenSpace, selected by Con i Bambini as part of the Fund to contrast the educational poverty of minors. Matches will also be held in multi-ethnic and educational emergency areas in the suburbs of large Italian cities to strengthen the shared message of solidarity and participation.

 

In Milan, the match will begin at 6 pm at the Centro Sportivo A.C. Milanese Corvetto (Via Fabio Massimo, 15/A) for migrants and students from IIS Schiapparelli Gramsci, who will be cheered on by the NEETs participating in projects “Tifa per te” and “Lavoro di squadra” organised by ActionAid.

 

In Rome, the match will being at 5:30 pm in the historical Quadraro Neighbourhood at the Centro Sportivo “L’airone” (Via del Quadraro 35) with students from IIS Torricelli and Piaget Diaz, the multi-ethnic Liberi Nantes Team and the “Guide Invisibili” Association. The event will be kicked off by Elena De Santis (Rome, District 7) and the Scientific Director of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, Alfonso Molina. The game will be radio-broadcasted by Radio Sapienza.

 

At 5 pm, students from IISS Salvemini and IISS Consoli Pinto, SPRAR Barletta Centre guests and young men and women from the “Casa delle culture” will meet at the Bari UISP San Girolamo Pitch (Via Ottorino Respighi 2). The event will be kicked off by Francesca Bottalico, Bari Welfare Councillor. At 5:30 pm, the match will begin in Reggio Calabria at the Ateneo CRAL-UNIRC Pitch (Via Salita Melissari 89124) for students from IISS Boccioni-FermiPanella-VallauriVilla San Giovanni and guests from the Bianco e “Approdi Mediterranei” SPRAR Centres. Here, the initiative has the patronage of the town hall and will be inaugurated by the Ombudsman for Infancy in Adolescence in Reggio Calabria and preceded by free visits to the city’s archeological sites organised by the Inside Association. The final match will start at 6 pm in Palermo (Via Albergheria) in the Ballarò neighbourhood. The game, which has the patronage of the city hall, will be inaugurated by Mayor Leoluca Orlando. The game will feature students from the Liceo Garibaldithe Palermo CPIA 1, and the “Consulta delle culture” and local young men and women.

 

All matches will be refereed by the Italian Referee Association. Our national media partner is Dire Giovani.
