How School Is Changing

How far has digital school progressed? How does it help teachers acquire the competences and tools necessary to face the new educational challenges? We will address these issues on Wednesday, October 17 at the Rome “IIS Leonardo Da Vinci” School together with Education Undersecretary Salvatore Giuliano.

The Fondazione Mondo Digitale will present the initial results achieved with "Computer Science First," the free Google Platform that helps teachers to quickly acquire digital competences and integrate didactic activities with more efficient methodologies. To date, 387 teachers have been trained in Milan, Rome and Naples. During the same day, 50 more teachers will begin training at 9 am.

A science lesson on the Cycle of water entirely programmed in block code, a digital story with robotic characters produced with recycled materials, a timeline to make history more exciting, a game on nutritional education … These are just a few of the projects developed by students and teachers on Computer Science First, the free Google platform provided to Italian schools in collaboration with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale. The CS First Platform is conceived for teachers who wish to introduce new technology in educational activities to make learning more exciting, active and fun: a quality school for everyone.

Video tutorials and simple, intuitive materials help even those teachers without experience to introduce new digital tools into traditional subjects and create vertical curricula that span elementary to high school and focus on each student’s individual ways of learning.

Thanks to the Computer Science First Programme, teachers have created custom-tailored, valuable content for students with special needs, too. They have been able to introduce interdisciplinary lessons and use peer-to-peer models to introduce hundreds of colleagues to coding, thereby setting off a multiplier effect both in and out of school.

Initial results of the testing phase, which involved 387 primary and secondary school teachers in Lazio, Lombardy and Campania, will be presented at the CS First Day on Wednesday, October 17 at 11.30 am at the IIS Leonardo Da Vinci School in Rome. Speakers include Salvatore Giuliano, Under Secretary for Education, University and Research; Diego Ciulli, Public Policy Manager for Google Italy, and Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, as well as professors and school administrators participating in the programme.

The event will shed light on the issues and challenges of a technological revolution that beyond introducing new didactic tools, must also rapidly provide teachers with new competences to help schools promote digital culture and drive the development of the country. During the same day, 50 more teachers will begin training at 9 am with Lara Forgione and Valentina Gelsomini, coaches at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym.
