Hour of Code Kicks Off

He discovered the Phyrtual Innovation Gym thanks to a lab he attended with his class at the IIS G. Marconi in Civitavecchia (Province of Rome) and hasn’t left it since. He collaborated as a digital coach at the International Hackathon for Civic and Social Innovation and the Coding Girls Hackathon, proving to be an excellent coach for both peers and younger children.

Andrea Morachioli, 18 years old, will host the Hour of Code Lab today at the Istituto comprensivo Via dei Consoli. Today’s event [see news Hour of Code in Rome] will officially kick off the week of coding labs organised as part of the global Hour of Code Campaign, promoted by the Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 5-11, 2016).

Over 3000 students in primary and secondary school, as well as at the Rome Phyrtual Innovation Gym will have access to coding labs organised by Microsoft and the Fondazione Mondo Digitale in collaboration with De Agostini to contribute to the global Hour of Code Campaign, an annual initiative that teaches the basics of programming during Computer Science Education Week (December 5-11).

The "Minecraft Hour of Code Designer" labs are based on a version of the famous videogame developed by game designers at Mojang and Microsoft, in partnership with Code.org, to provide students and teachers with a unique opportunity to learn programming with a simple and familiar tool (Minecraft) that is already used and appreciated by schools around the world.

"This year we have involved the Phyrtual Innovation Gym coaches in the Hour of Code, who will hold 30 labs in our “Experience Centre.” Moreover, the Coding Girls, trained thanks to the programme promoted with the American Embassy in Italy and Microsoft will also participate, forming a highly qualified group of young coaches that will be able to attract their peers and younger generations to scientific subjects and the use of new technology,” explains Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.

"Our coaches play a strategic role, assisting teachers and helping schools to promote new courses with the help of games and the principle of gamification to narrow the gap between education and the job market.”
