Help via Telephone

Last week, we started the first telephone helpdesks for Project Starting Back Up Together, developed in collaboration by the Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases (INMI), Regione Lazio and the Fondazione Mondo Digitale. Young men and women will work together with local medical offices for the wellbeing and health of citizens aged over 65 during the emergency. The pilot version of the project will begin in Rome’s ASL 3, providing the community with the intergenerational learning model and the Network of Knowledge Volunteers.

How does the project work concretely? Who are the volunteers? What are the needs of the elderly?

Today, we introduce you to Massimiliano who is helping out Giovanna (70) and Luciano (82).

“Giovanna is very curious and active. She is not afraid of learning. She asked for help to learn how to scan documents with her mobile phone,” explains Massimiliano. “Luciano, instead, needed to book his Covid vaccine shot on the Lazio Region website.”

Massimiliano (19) studies Computer Science at the University of Edinburgh. In Rome, he learned about Project Starting Back Up Together and decided to join as a volunteer to satisfy his curiosity and desire to help others.

“Explaining these things on the phone with only words is a real challenge. However, I’m really happy to be participating in this project as I believe this is an important quality to develop.”

In the meantime, training has ended for the high school students, including the Liceo Giulio Cesare, which had been inadvertently left out in the first list [see news: Volunteers in Training].
