What is the relationship of young men and women with illness? How do adolescents behave when faced with their own or other people’s illnesses? How can school help them to manage daily stress and to face important emergencies such as the one we are living today? These are just a few of the questions that were addressed by the live “Experts in Class” event that was held this morning with the patronage of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. Connected to a widespread, over 800 students and teachers from around Italy participated in the event with Education Minister Lucia Azzolina, Mayor Virginia Raggi and Professor Massimo Andreoni, Head of the Infectious Diseases Ward at the Rome “Tor Vergata” General Hospital.

The event was held as part of Factor J, the programme promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale in collaboration with Janssen Italia, the pharmaceutical division of Johnson & Johnson, to educate 100,000 young men and women about inclusion, diversity and empathy towards people affected by diseases. The course includes both on-line and traditional education, besides videos and meetings with national patient associations and important scientific partners.

“Notwithstanding the lockdown, in just over a month, we have reached 1000 students from 21 school in 19 different cities. And we have done it starting with the regions that have been hit hardest by the emergency, such as Codogno and Brescia,” explains Mirta Michilli, Director General at the Fondazione Mondo Digitale. “During the course of these months, we have reflected on the importance of our health and on human values, on the need to advance research and give people more life. We have to look to the future, working on prevention, and Factor J will certainly provide a contribution,” added Massimo Scaccabarozzi, President and CEO, Janssen Italia.

Out of 1000 interviewed students, 40% feels ill at ease with individuals affected by a pathology. The emotions students refer to include sadness, melancholy, nostalgia, fear of the future, boredom and anxiety. Young people feel that they are empathic but do not feel capable of managing their emotions and transforming negative ones into positive ones.

100-second video kicked off the Factor J awareness-raising campaign. The course will take place both on-line and in presence in six Italian Regions: Lazio, Lombardy, Piedmont, Sicily, Emilia Romagna and Veneto. Experts will introduce the young participants to a correct scientific understanding of how to prevent and face certain pathologies with a particular focus on the following areas: haematology, immunology, infectiology, pulmonary hypertension and neuroscience. Patient associations will help them to understand the more personal and intimate dimension of the illness and develop their emotional intelligence and a greater awareness of “diversity” and “uniqueness.”

The Rome “Campus Bio-Medico” University is the project’s scientific partner.
