GJC - Edition Six Kicks Off
 
Promoted by the City of Rome, the Global Junior Challenge is organised every other year by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale under the High Patronage of the Italian Presidency. The GJC is a unique opportunity to reflect on the challenges that are posed by 21st century education and the role of technology of didactic innovation, social integration, development and the reduction of global poverty.
 
The competition is for school and universities, public and private institutions and cultural cooperatives and associations as well as enterprises and individual citizens. The deadline for project registration is June 30th, 2011. The final event will be held in Rome, October 19-21, 2011.
 
Admissible projects, operative as of Dec. 31, 2010, must target youth up to the age of 29 and address new ICTs for education and training.
 
Projects will be organised by categories based on the age of the participants:
 
  • up to 10 years old
  • up to 15 years old
  • up to 18 years old
  • up to 29 years old
 
There will also be three special categories, the latter two being novelties for the 2011 edition:
  • ICT for the job placement of young people
  • ICT for the integration of immigrants and refugees in collaboration with the United Nations Alliance Civilization (UNAOC)
  • ICT for sustainable environmental development in partnership with Legambiente.
 
An international jury will select projects and proclaim the winners. There will be five types of awards:
  • the Global Junior Challenge Award will be presented to winning projects selected amongst all participants;
  • the President of the Republic Award will be presented to the most innovative projects from Italian schools;
  • the Small fund Award will be presented to projects from developing countries;
  • the ICT for the Social Participation of Youth in collaboration with the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations will promote projects developed by the new generations that produced true social change.
  • The i-Prof Award will be awarded Intel Italia to the teacher who designs and develops the most innovative idea to involve the most students (especially fragile students and those at risk of social exclusion) through state-of-the art technology.
 
Prior to the Awards Ceremony at the Rome Campidoglio (21 October 2011) an exhibition will present the finalist projects and be accompanied by workshops, debates and meetings (19-20 October 2009).
