Experimenting with Art

The students at the RUFA - Rome University of Fine Arts were entrusted with producing the story of the first edition of the BNL Media Art Festival, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale in co-production with BNL Group BNP Paribas (April 13-17, 2016).

The video has been produced by Alessandro Caruso, Gioacchino D'Amico and Alessia Capuccini. Here is the story they developed:

Over seventy artists from different countries and cultures and with different languages and expressive techniques filled the MAXXI Museum of 21st Century Art with an extraordinary live exhibition that could be touched, experimented and transformed. And explored through augmented reality with the help of a smartphone or tablet. An exhibition that brought art closer to the visitors, making it familiar, stimulating curiosity and new interests.

More than 60 experts from all over the world came together to explain media art in eight different internationally renowned locations. Round tables, performances, art lunches, pitches ... each appointment was carefully planned to involve, for the first time and in a single festival, a wide range of visitors and allow them to discover media art. Media art is a form of expression that moulds technology that is rapidly changing our society and uses it to help us interpret new challenges and cultural emergencies.

The festival was co-produced with BNL Group BNP Paribas, and a vast network of over 20 partners, from Embassies to Academies.

However, beyond the figures, which remain surprising for such a new and original experience, what interests us is the quality of the educational proposal, because creativity and technology and increasingly key words for jobs and new professions. Thirteen artists worked with 12 schools in Naples, Rome and Milan to create a shared work to exhibit at the MAXXI. The winning work became part of the BNL artistic heritages, which included over 5000 other works. This is a strong signal to start investing in education, creativity and technology to drive the entire country forward. In fact, as we know, the cultural system has a multiplier effect on the development of the entire economy.

We lived streamed the BNL Media Art Festival, experimented with the original crowdsourcing formula, and gave a voice to visitors, who were transformed into actors, part of the art works. A new community is forming around media art: a new, active, strong, original, creative community that looks far ahead. We’ll develop the next edition together.
