An Elderly Centre for the Young

An Elderly Centre for the Young

The Colonna elderly centre (via de Burrò 160) is one of the nine social centres of the I Municipio with a total of 3700 members or 13% of the over-sixty-five population. It is also one of the 50 elderly centres in Rome that have activated an Internet Corner Telemouse with three on-line computers.

President Giampiero Lombardini coordinates the activities of over 500 members and is a staunch supporter of the pilot role of elderly centres as small loci of social innovation, even for the new generations.

Cecilia Stajano, Manager for Empowerment and Development of Local Learning Communities, visited the centre and President Giampiero explained the strategic choices that were adopted.

Volunteers from the Red Cross have organized activities at the centre for several years and easily adapted to the new digital literacy strategy. Two course groups use the Internet Corner this year, but the waiting list for the September courses has already reached fifty.

The volunteers help the over-sixties come gradually into contact with new technologies. Carlo, in particular, tries to answer all their questions as best he can, showing them how to obtain their answers through on-line research. Today’s lesson, for example, is on mobility. The Atac site (the Rome transportation authority) allows the elders to learn to calculate their itineraries ad find the shortest routes to their destination.
