The Educating Community

The Grandparents on the Internet digital literacy course for elders in Cerveteri has just ended. The lessons, coordinated by two teachers, Martano e De Mari, were held at the Istituto comprensivo Marina di Cerveteri, managed by Headmaster Maria Vitoria Serru.

Twenty students participated in the project as tutors and earned curricular credit.

According to Auser coordinators in Cerveteri, the benefits of the course extend beyond technical learning. Grandparents on the Internet created a true inter-generational alliance, teaching reciprocal respect and consideration and overcoming the stereotypes attributed to the two generations, grandparents and grandchildren.

“The elders who participated in the course discovered a new world and loved it, never wanting to leave the computers when the lessons ended,” points out Giulia with great satisfaction.

Now, the grandparents have earned their diplomas and can continue with the advanced courses. The school is organizing these with students from the last year of the first-degree secondary school.

Moreover, the collaboration is not unidirectional. The grandparents at Auser collected money to purchase a tablet for a student with a specific learning disorder and the headmaster confirms that the results are excellent. Thus, a learning community is born in Cerveteri!
