A Dress for the Emergency

Can the clothes that we wear every day help us stay healthy? Can they defend us from insidious external agents and monitor our wellbeing? This is not about the special suits that doctors wear in high-risk wards, but clothes that we could wear any day, when there is an ongoing emergency, just like today.

Matteo Viscogliosi, a maker and designer, who organised the Fashion Digital Night fashion show for the Fondazione Mondo Digitale has reminded us that we saw something similar at Altaroma: the HYPSIBIUS, the winning project in the Wearable Technology Category at the second edition of the Digital Made. For Young Fashion Talents Contest.

"Our line of clothing and accessories prepares us for the type of devastated and harsh environment that requires individuals to be isolated for long periods of time and move around constantly to survive,” explained creators Julieta Scatena and Luciana Romano, when we still knew nothing about how the coronavirus would transform our lives.

The two young stylists from Argentina work on clothes that are versatile and can be custom-tailored with the digital accessories necessary for hostile environments. “Our proposal is to exploit technology to develop clothes that will become a crucial ally for survival.”

The dress presented at the Fashion Digital Night was equipped with a device for measuring cardiac frequency and determining the weather conditions, as well as a movement sensor and a metal detector, all of which are visible and easily accessible for quick use in case of emergency.
