On 29 October in Almenno San Bartolomeo, a free event to introduce local residents to artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence is finding its way into our homes, schools, workplaces and everyday interactions. But what opportunities do we have to understand how it works, discuss its implications and learn to use it responsibly? And how can we make these opportunities accessible even in small towns, far from the main hubs of innovation?
These questions have given rise to “Il Digitale in Valle”, an event organised by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale ETS as part of the Coding Girls & Women programme, with support from the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies. The aim is to bring opportunities for digital education and public debate to the Bergamo area, promoting community spaces as places for lifelong learning, participation and intergenerational dialogue.
The first event is scheduled for Thursday 29 October 2026, from 8.30 pm to 10.30 pm, in the council chamber of the Municipality of Almenno San Bartolomeo, at Via IV Novembre 66. The meeting, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the local council.
A community at the gateway to the Imagna Valley
Around twelve kilometres from Bergamo, Almenno San Bartolomeo is a municipality with a population of around 6,600, situated at the entrance to the Imagna Valley. It is a hilly area, rich in history and traditions, also known for the Rotonda di San Tomè, one of the most representative examples of Romanesque architecture in the Bergamo area. In a community where around one in five residents is aged 65 or over, intergenerational dialogue is a valuable resource, particularly when it comes to navigating technological change. Bringing education on artificial intelligence into community spaces means broadening opportunities for participation and recognising the value of local communities in building a shared digital culture. This is the project’s aim: to make knowledge and tools accessible so that people can make sense of the transformations taking place, by involving citizens of different ages, backgrounds and skill sets.
Understanding AI to make informed choices
The session will be led by Sabrina D’Avolio, a trainer and project officer at the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, with over twenty years’ experience in digital education. The training programme guides participants through an exploration of how artificial intelligence works, starting with the fundamental concepts and moving on to applications that are most relevant to everyday life. It addresses the opportunities and limitations of generative systems, the protection of personal data, the risks associated with algorithmic errors and biases, alongside the key provisions of theEuropean AI Act. Particular attention is paid to the impact of AI on young people, schools and the world of work, as well as to new ways of engaging with smart technologies and the responsibilities that come with their use. Practical examples are provided to give participants a closer look at the tools and ways of interacting with generative artificial intelligence.
The initiative thus offers a space for open discussion, where citizens’ questions become the starting point for building greater awareness. Because the ability to understand and shape innovation is also developed through opportunities to meet, listen and learn together.
