"The homes of teachers are always open, the camera is on,” says Headmistress Cristina Reinero, who directs the Istituto Superiore Galilei Ferraris in Settimo Torinese. During her phone conversation with Cecilia Stajano [@CStajano] she went straight to the heart of the issues experienced by the school in the suburbs of Turin that is attended by students who are “poorer” in every which way. Many of the students have been left without digital devices because the companies have not been able to deliver them before July. And there is a connection issue for smartphones: students do not have enough data on their plans.

The strength of this school is grounded in communication and the professional and human qualities of its faculty, who work with their own means. After teaching Mathematics and Physics for 30 years, Cristina now directs a faculty body of over 100 teachers. And she underlines how most of their work – even in normal times – is conducted at home, preparing lessons. “At school, they only have a drawer, in the teachers’ room. One hundred of them share six computers. They conduct their studies at home at their desk. They are volunteers.” Most importantly, they have been able to face the health emergency thanks to their preparation and motivation, adapting to a ten-year transformation in the course of a couple of weeks.

Cecilia Stajano also speaks to a teacher, Tazio Brusasco, who has a degree in Anthropology and teachers Italian and History. Is distance learning really school? Cecilia poses this ongoing debate to Professor Tazio who answers without hesitating: school can also be conducted at a distance. Schooling is now diluted throughout the day and has become a much stronger educational bond.
