(Coding) Girls in ICT Day

The great Coding Girls Educational Alliance focuses on STEM education, from programming to artificial intelligence, as a fundamental fulcrum to enable women to become protagonists of the jobs of the future. On Thursday, April 28 from 10:30 to 1:00 pm, there will be a live event and activities in the Universities of TurinMilanRome and Naples.

Women continue to be underrepresented in emerging professions. In cloud computing, for example, only 12% of professionals are women. In roles related to engineering, such as data analysis and artificial intelligence, the percentages are respectively 15 and 26. This is why the Coding Girls of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale will be at the Girls in ICT Day, promoted by the International Telecommunication Union(ITU), to encourage girls and young women to undertake professional careers in technological sectors and transform diversity into an enabling factor for innovation.  This year will focus on access and security to eliminate the barriers that women still encounter and increase their security in digital environments.

On Thursday, April 28 for the GICT Day, the Coding Girls and participating universities, will involve young women in high schools in a series of orientation meetings and role modelling session to explore the scenario provided by new technologies and incentivise women. To undertake careers in STEM.

The opening event, that will be held on-line at 10:30 with universities in ten cities will also be an opportunity to present the results achieved by the eighth edition of Coding Girls, the programme organised by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the United States Diplomatic Mission to Italy, in collaboration with Microsoft, to reduce gender prejudice in scientific and technological sectors, sectors which still require skilled personnel and present numerous professional opportunities. The eighth edition has involved 15,000 female students in 47 cities and 32 academic partners. In Turin, the tests conducted with the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo has identified the impact of the programme in overcoming gender stereotypes.

The live session, which will be moderated by RAI Journalist Alma Grandin, will be opened by Roberta Cocco, Counsellor to the Minister for Technological Innovation and Digital Transition. Speakers include Mirta Michilli, Director General, Fondazione Mondo Digitale; Ruth Newman, Deputy Spokesperson, US Embassy, Rome; Annamaria Bottero, Director, Customer Experience & Success Division, Microsoft Italia; Rosanna Ventrella, Vice-President, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo. The universities participating in the educational alliance will also be present. “Artificial Intelligence is a Challenge for Women" is the title of the contribution by Elisa Benetti, Senior Consultant, @asUgo, partner Women in Big Data, who will conclude the live session.

Morning activities will continue until 1 pm with meetings in presence at partner universities in Rome, Milan, Turin and Palermo.
