Civic Education is Back

Yesterday, House of Representatives approved the draft bill on civic education, although there is no mention of gender equality.

Yesterday, Parliament approved the draft bill on the Introduction of Civic Education in School Programmes (in Italian). The draft bill will now head to the Senate.

The text of the draft bill, which was approved with 451 votes in favour, none against and three abstentions, includes some important modifications, but is also missing fundamental amendments, such as that presented by LEU MPs Federico Fornaro and Nicola Fratoianni calling for “a sentimental education for the educational, cultural and emotional development of young boys and girls in terms of gender equality and solidarity amongst the sexes.”

Without legislation focusing on an increased respect of gender differences, there will be an even greater strategic emphasis on the actions promoted by European Project Gender Equality Matters (GEM): Tackling Gender-based Violence conducted by lead partner Dublin City University (Ireland) with Kentro Merimnas Oikogeneias Kai Paidiou (Greece), Universidad De Murcia (Spain), Fondazione Mondo Digitale (Italy) and the European School Heads Association (Netherlands).

The project involves primary and secondary schools in a course on gender education and stereotypes, as well as the respect for equality and gender differences, providing an answer to a need expressed by many teachers and parent associations to promote education and reciprocal respect and contrast gender stereotypes as an antidote against violence, discrimination and bullying.
