Beyond Prejudice

At the Rome Istituto Comprensivo via dell’Archeologia, the “Grandparents on the Internet: a click for company” course promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, Spi Cgil and Auser, has just ended.

“The students have been very patient and enjoyed helping the elders who attended the course, overcoming all of the prejudice they may have had beforehand” explains Paolo Carlotti, the course coordinator.

Nourhène is 12 years old and comes from Tunisia. He tutored Sergio (66) and Enza (59) who had never used a computer before. Now, they know how to write, draw, send e-mails and check websites that interest them.

What is the most important quality a tutor must have? Patience, says Michelle.

“I have also learnt a thing or two from them” adds Emanuele who is surprised about how his student Marisa (65) learned so rapidly. Unfortunately, the course is finished, but Marisa hopes to keep meeting Emanuele and practicing on the computer at the elderly centre.
