At the 2014 Awards Ceremony for Project Nerd?, promoted by the Computer Science Department of the Rome Sapienza University in collaboration with IBM, the winners also received a coupon to participate in the Fab Lab at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym. Nerd is an acronym for the Italian expression “It’s not stuff for women?”
Today, the sixteen women will be welcomed by Eningeer Mohamed and two young coaches, Giada and Susanna (smart dress fashionistas), who will give them a guided tour of the lab and its machinery. The Rome Fab Lab is based on MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms and houses a variety of innovative tools, including 3D Sharebot Printers, 3D PowerWASP Printers, laser cutters, plotters, lathes, pantographs, sanders, etc.).
At the end of the introduction, each visitor will have the opportunity to create an object with a small didactic laser cutter (500 x 300 mm work surface) that can work a range of materials, including wood, Plexiglas, textiles and rubber.
