A2/A4 - Family Format School

Teachers and students run home courses on language, culture and technology for the full integration of foreign citizens. The A2/A4 – Family Format School Project, financed by the FEI Fund, is promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale in partnership with the Istituto comprensivo di San Demetrio Ne’ Vestini and the Sirentina Mountain Community. On Friday October 21st at 10:30 am, the didactic activities will be presented to all residents at the school.

A2 is the level of Italian that foreign citizens must attempt to master. A4 is the sheet of paper used by the students to prepare the didactic material. Family Format is the intergenerational learning model promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale: students, coordinated by teachers, instruct adults based on their true needs and skills.

Nearly 17% of the school population is of foreign origin, especially from Macedonia and Albania. In fact, more than 50% of the immigrants living in the municipality come from Macedonia.

The foreign students who attend the school will prepare the didactic activities on the basis of the effective linguistic and cultural needs of their parents, while the Italian students work on simplification and localization activities. Didactic Units on Italian language, culture and daily life (transport, banks, first aid, etc.) will reach the homes of those citizens who have difficulties moving from their house, such as women. The activities will begin with the parents of students and then reach out to the entire municipality and neighboring ones (reaching the Mountain Community of Sirentina); Particular attention will be paid to all the foreign families that have been most isolated since the 2009 earthquake.

The planned activities include an intercultural blog to promote community dialogue, videoconferences and events for all residents, subject specific meetings at school and mobile Internet points with laptops connected to the Internet to provide practical on-line assistance. The students will become trainers and peace ambassadors for social cohesion amongst the foreign communities and their new community.

The project will be presented in a ceremony on Friday, October 21st at 10:30 at the Istituto Comprensivo di San Demetrio ne’ Vestini in via Madonna dei Raccomandati. Participants include: L’Aquila Prefect Giovanna Maria Iurato, President of the Comunità Montana Sirentina Luigi Fasciani, Headmaster Lucia Di Giulio, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale Mirta Michilli and the Youth Mayor Danilo De Crescentis.

Students and teachers will present examples of their innovative didactics for integration.

Mayors from the eight municipalities of the participating students will also attend.
