The objective of the document is to create more informed citizens by increasing the book and paper reading, encouraging the citizens to actively participate in the democratic and political life of the region and constructively contributing to economic and civil developments.
The book was presented on November 22 during a press conference in Catanzaro at the seat of the Regional government, Palazzo Alemanni. The initiative was outlined by the Regional Councillor for Culture Mario Caligiuri, the Regional School Coordinator, Francesco Mercurio, and Tullio De Mauro, linguist and former Minister of Education.
The Professor Emeritus explained that in Calabria "people read very little just as in many other parts of Italy, but here it is even more worrying. There is a vast gap between an educated minority and a large portion of the population that is completely excluded from all forms of knowledge and even elementary reading.”
The first draft of the document will be discussed locally to gather ideas and contributions to orient economic and political resources towards this sector.
