A Keyboard for Your ABCs

The multi-purpose centre for the reception and integration of refugees, asylum seekers and beneficiaries of secondary protection considers the teaching of Italian language a primary objective.

For beginners, lessons are organized as group games inspired by the social theatre and the theatre of the oppressed methods. Whilst learning the phonemes and letters of the Italian language, the students work in groups and identify similarities and differences with their mother tongue, such as in the pronunciation of sounds.

Moreover, a new experiment began last Thursday: on one day each week, the Italian class moves into the Internet Café and the language teachers are assisted by the laboratory personnel.

The computer keyboard thereby becomes a precious ally in learning the Italian language. How can students memorise the difference between capital and small letters? With the help of the Caps Lock! A small team of researchers is already at work to produce new didactic material.

Amongst the challenges that this new type of experimentation faces is that of creating a powerful L2 literacy tool that will also serve for students who did not learn to read or write in their language of origin.
