Studying in class with tutors and reviewing at the elderly centre.

After having learnt the rudiments of Internet navigation with the help of students and teachers at the Istituto tecnico commerciale Ferdinando Magellano, the silver surfers of the Dragona Elderly Centre are ready to set sail.

Lessons for Internet beginners will now be held by the certified grandparents who attended the previous Grandparents on the Internet courses promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.

The six PCs at the Dragona Elderly Centre were regenerated and donated by the students of Rome participating in the “Do not throw me away … there’s mail for me @ the Elderly Centre” PC recycling campaign.

The over one thousand senior citizens, who participate in the activities of this social centre, have pioneered many pilot initiatives (such as experimenting with a simplified notebook prototype designed by Intel). Now, they are organising a press conference to publicly announce the first full experience of self-management for digital literacy addressing senior citizens. This will allow the elders to communicate on-line both amongst themselves and via the services provided by the public administration.

The Press Conference, scheduled for October 15 at 4:30 pm, will be held at the Dragona Elderly Centre (Via Carlo Casini 3) and will feature the participation of:

  • Sveva Belviso, Rome Municipal Councillor for Social Policy and Services
  • Giacomo Vizzani, President of the XIII District of the Municipality of Rome
  • Lodovico Pace, Councillor for Social Services, Housing Emergency and Schooling
  • Graziella Albanese, Coordinator of Elderly Centres for the XIII District
  • Mirta Michilli, General Manager of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale
