Final event for Project Social Hosting Hub: Monday, July 4, in Rome.

Fondazione Mondo Digitale, ActionAid, Comunità di Sant’Egidio and Parole O_Stili present the final results of Project Social Hosting Hub, with phyrtual activities from 50 local hubs from Udine to Syracuse. The appointment is for Monday, July 4, at 5 pm, in the heart of Rome, in the Trastevere area.

Nearly every Italian citizen owns a smartphone (97,3%): 51 million are connected to the Internet and over 43  million are active on social networks. According to the data presented in We Are Social and HootSuite’s “Digital 2022” Report, an increasing number of Italians spend time on-line and keep in contact through social platforms, but is a connection sufficient to be in a relation? Is the use of smartphones what defines us as digital citizens and an active part of a community?

Through Social Hosting Hub, one of the projects that won the Google.org Impact Challenge on security, Fondazione Mondo DigitaleActionAidComunità di Sant'Egidio and Parole O_Stili, accepted the challenge of developing a new way of interacting on-line and developed the first phyrtual educational ecosystem (physical and virtual) composed of connections, relations and communities. The ecosystem is a safe place for everyone with tools calibrated for each age group to obtain information, choose the correct communicational style and behaviour, learn in a transformative manner, and develop new paradigms for socialisation based on common values.

The informative and educational activities have been disseminated by 50 local hubs to local communities and have involved over 22,000 minors (aged 6 – 17) and 10,000 adults, including students, teachers, parents, fragile categories and citizens in general.

On Monday, July 4, the social hub coordinated by the Comunità di Sant’Egidio, in Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, project beneficiaries will present their experiences on-line, experimenting with community digital tools developed to keep various generations safe, both on- and off-line. From an app to manage emotions for younger children to artificial intelligence devices to help people acquire a better awareness in choosing non-hostile words to digital rooms for learning to debate and argument.

The event will be introduced and moderated by Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale. Following the welcome by Stefano Orlando, Coordinator of Youth Activities at the Comunità Sant’Egidio, speakers will include: Ilaria Graziano, Project Manager, Fondazione Mondo Digitale; Martina Colasante, Government Affairs and Public Policy, Google Italia; Barbara Mineo, School Director, IC Giovanni XXIII in Paceco (Trapani); Francesca Caviglia, student at IIS Via dei Papareschi, Rome; Daniela Menin, teacher at IC San Giorgio delle Pertiche, Santa  Giustina in Colle (Padua); Francesca Altomonte, ActionAid worker.

How can we recognise fake news and access correct information? Can we defend ourselves from on-line risks? What strategies can we field to prevent cyberbullying? How can we transform connections into relations? How can we empathise with connections behind screens? Are we aware of our “on-line reputation”? All the didactic resources developed by the project, materials and tools, are available at www.socialhostinghub.org.
