Computers, disused by companies and recycled by students, are donated to social centers for the elderly
Recycling pc for use at senior citizens community centers was begun in February 2006 as part of the Grandparents on the Internet digital literacy project. This activity was launched during a public event that featured the participation of 1,200 students from different schools in Rome. These computers no longer required by the companies and refurbished by students were donated to the city’s social centers for the elderly. The first “Refurbishment shops” were set up at nine schools in the nation’s capital. Subsequently other schools involved in the SOUTHERN ITALIAN Grandparents on the Internet project set up pc refurbishment centers of their own.
The “Non mi buttare... Al centro anziani c'è post@ per me”(Don’t throw me away, there’s a pl@ce for me at the Senior Community Center) campaign benefited from ample coverage by the print press and radio in addition to the billboard space donated by the City of Rome. The purpose of the campaign was to equip each one of Rome’s senior citizens centers (approx. 135) with two or three computers.
To date, over 850 pc have been collected – a figure that keeps rising rapidly. These computers are donated by various public and private organizations and private citizens. Organizations that donated pc include: Poste Italiane (no other agency donated more), ENI Foundation, Zetema, Engineering, City of Rome, the Supreme Court, and various law firms.
Before delivery to the senior citizens centers, the pc are reformatted and provided with new software. This work is performed in the schools that also provide the storage space for the pc received.
The first schools to participate in the project were: Itis G. Armellini, Itis B. Pascal, Itis E. Fermi, Itis A. Pacinotti, Itc P. Calamandrei, Itis H. Hertz, Ls B. Russell, Ips C. Cattaneo, and the P. Stefanelli middle school. So far, around 170 pc have been refurbished and distributed to 68 senior citizens centers.
Six refurbishment shops have also been set up as part of the SOUTHERN ITALIAN Grandparents on the Internet Project at the following six schools: Itis “B. Focaccia”, Salerno, Campania; Itas “Salvator Ruiu”, Sardinia, Itis "A. Pacinotti", Taranto, Apulia; Itis “E. Majorana”, Ragusa, Sicily; “A. Monaco”, Cosenza, Calabria; and Ips “Generale G. Parisi”, Moliterno, Basilicata.
Microsoft permitted the use of its operating system and Word program at a reduced price, also because the Foundation is a certified MAR Center (Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher). The refurbished computers also permit the use of open source software, which is always free of charge.
