When Freedom is a Refugee

In order to remember the 27th of February 1976 and narrate the dignity of a people fighting for their freedom, the XV District of Rome, together with the Bambini+Diritti Association and the Gruppo Equoqua, will celebrate the 33rd anniversary of the Saharawi Democratic Arab Republic next Friday from 6 pm at the Il Mitreo in via Mazzacurati 61/63 (Corviale).

The Saharawi Democratic Arab Republic celebrates its 33rd birthday, but silence and exile continue to haunt the faces of the 160,000 refugees that live in Algerian territory near Tindouf in terrible conditions.

The Saharawi Democratic Arab Republic is the political dream of a society founded on reciprocal rights and respect. The Saharawi People have a profound conscience of their history and culture, which leads to a social organisation based on participation and inclusion. In the refugee camps, children are fully schooled, women are involved in institutions in significant numbers and health training is optimal

The debate on “There is no freedom as a refugee” will feature the participation of:

  • Gianni Paris, President of Rome’s XV District
  • Fatima Mahfud, Representative of the Polisario Front in Italy
  • Clara Simeone, School Administrator for the 159_ Circolo didattico Magliana that will host a group of Saharawi children over the summer
  • Matteo Mennini, Head of Projects for “Bambini+Diritti”

The Digital Bridge Project has brought the Internet to Wilaya in Aaiun (one of the four great tent cities and administrative provinces of the Western Sahara), allowing the refugees to project their voice worldwide. The Digital Bridge Project brings technological infrastructures, technical assistance, didactic plans and professional training to its beneficiaries. The e-inclusion project for the Saharawi People is financed by the Lazio Region, coordinated by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and implemented on the territory by the social promotion association Bambini+Diritti.
