Tele Mouse: 61 Courses Begin

The first 60 digital and functional literacy courses for the elderly are kicking off in Rome. The elderly will be able to study in the multimedia labs of neighbourhood schools and will be helped by teachers and school students volunteering in the afternoon as tutors.

During the academic year 2010-11, 61 TeleMouse courses will be held:

  • 33 by tutors in second degree secondary schools (22 technical institutes, 5 classic lyceums and 6 scientific lyceums)
  • 16 by tutors from first degree secondary schools
  • 12 by tutors from primary schools

The Knowledge Volunteers include both students at their first experience as tutors and students who have already volunteered for 2-3 years.

Giulia, for example, attends the liceo scientifico Newton and will be a tutor for the third time. She always forms an extraordinary relationship with the elders that she tutors.

Researcher Ana Lain has asked Giulia to tell her about her experience.

I had a very special relationship with Giuliana. We understood each other immediately and still keep in touch via e-mail. Once, she was playing solitaire while the teacher was explaining a concept and I didn’t know if this was allowed or not! When the teacher walked past us, I immediately closed the game window. “Wow, honey, you saved me! Thanks!” and from then on we have become accomplices!
